What’s the difference?

Press Kit or Media Kit

I’ve often seen the terms “press kit” and “media kit” used interchangeably. Are they actually interchangeable? How should you use one, and when do you need one? And how does it all relate to a press page?

What is a press kit?

A press kit is a collection of materials designed to provide a journalist with all the necessary information about a company, individual, product, service or event. It usually includes press releases, fact sheets, biographies, high-resolution images and contact information.

What is a media kit?

A media kit is a collection of materials and assets designed to promote a brand to audiences beyond just journalists, including influencers, bloggers, and potential business partners. In addition to traditional press kit elements like press releases and company overviews, media kits often include branding assets (logos, taglines), audience demographics, testimonials, social media statistics, and case studies. The goal is to showcase the brand’s value and make it appealing for collaborations or media coverage.

Key Differences

  • A press kit focuses on traditional media professionals like journalists and editors. It includes press releases, high-resolution images, biographies of key staff, and contact information. It’s primary goal is to facilitate media coverage about your company.

  • A media kit focus is on influencers, bloggers and potential collaborators. In addition to traditional press kit elements, it will also have media stats, videos, branding guidelines, audience demographics, and advertising opportunities. Often it is used to attract sponsors or advertisers.

Knowing your target audience and your purpose will help you decide whether you need a press kit or media kit.

So while the terms press kit and media kit are often interchanged there are key differences.

Where to Place Your Kits

Press kit location:
In addition to recently covered media pieces, a press page will have a the press kit, or all the information from the press kit. Journalists usually look for a link to this page in the footer of a website.

Media kit location: Often located in contact or collaboration page. Include a link to your media kit there. For brands targeting influencers and digital creators, adding a link to the media kit in social media bio can increase visibility.

For both kits:

  • Make sure kits are well-organized and easy to navigate with clear headings and download options.

  • Use SEO friendly labels like “press kit” or “media kit” to make them discoverable through search engines.

  • Keep them updated with current assets, stats, and contact information to maintain relevance.

Do this now: Decide if you need a media kit or press kit. Make a list of what you need for your target audience and your purpose and start working on it. If you collect one item a day, you’ll have it ready in no time at all!

Term to Learn

Media Clippings are mentions of your brand in newspapers, blogs, podcasts, magazines, TV, and online media. The term originates from physically cutting out these mentions from print publications, but today, coverage is tracked using digital tools and software.

Space Travel + Girl Power = Super PR Stunt

All-female space crew launched into space on Monday, returning safely.

Now this is what I call a PR stunt. Of course, most of us don’t have the budget for rocket ships or celebrity endorsements, so what can we learn?

First off the ladies we’re glammed up. Many were watching so attention was given to how they would look. From their custom-made suits, to hair and makeup being on point, they captured the attention of millions. They did extensive press before and were always looking professional. For the space flight they were also looking beautiful. When you’re on the camera or speaking in front of people, take care that what you are wearing doesn’t distract from your message. It shows respect to the listener that you cared enough to put effort into how you look.

Blue Origins chose carefully the women that would be ambassadors for this event. Each woman had a different message to convey, which was conveyed in their style, but all in harmony with Blue Origins brand values. If you have ambassadors, employees or anyone representing your company, make sure they know your brand’s values and key messaging.
