What's in store for this edition:

PR takes work, but it is effective
PR Win: 3 articles in 4 months
Recently I sat down with Attention Seeker reader, Alexis Scott, and learned how she’s been quite the media maven by putting forth the strategies that I’ve outlined throughout these series and getting published.
I hope her story inspires you to carve out the time and promote yourself.
Q: Alexis tell us a little about your background?
I’m a realtor in Chattanooga, Tennessee for 9 years, I’m in the top 3% and sold about 300 homes. I went to school and got a degree in public relations, but never used it professionally. I became a realtor instead.
Q: Do you think PR helps your business?
To be honest I had lost track of PR in my business. I had this education of PR and what it can do, but I wasn’t doing it. It had changed so much since I was in school. However I’ve been able to get reliable information from you in terms of what list to sign up for, what subscriptions to have, and keywords to get alerts for. Since I started using the advice I received I have had three of my articles been published and I’ve seen an increase in my profile views and website clicks. It’s a easy way to show clients that I’m a expert in my field.
Q: How do you balance your day-to-day responsibilities with promoting yourself?
It’s easy to lose track of all the things that you need to do to promote yourself. One of the simplest things is actually the hardest thing to do. That is to record and take content, and then deliver that content in a way that is valuable to people.
Finding time to write articles, put all your thoughts together in a way that going to be easy for people to understand is a challenge and takes time, but is totally worth it.
For me, if you focus on staying true to your expertise and the type of client your looking for, that helps with these challenges.
Q: How did the advice you got from me help you?
So even though I had this background in PR, that was 10 years ago, a lot had changed. It was all about press releases and very media focused. Whereas now you have opportunities to connect on a much wider scale through different outlets and methods. I’ve learned how to do that. Go just beyond media, but how to communicate.
Before this interview I also read the episode about podcasting so I knew what and how to prepare.
Q: What’s your number one tip for getting referrals?
The simple answer is providing a great experience and going above and beyond. But the practical thing I like to do is reward behavior. What I mean is if I get a referral or even a text that says I passed along your name to a family member, I will always send a thank you note and gift because I’m appreciative. So if someone thinks of me and recommends me, then I reward that.
Q: What do you do to give back?
As a realtor I’m really passionate about home ownership, and home ownership being achievable. We did a spring soiree this year where we raised $5,000 towards Habitat for Humanity. They have a financial literacy program and sweat equity program where they work on their home and learn about financial literacy and caring for a home. This is an educational process which is the biggest success point to get people to continue home ownership and build wealth.

FAQ
Q: What if I try to get quoted as an expert and I keep failing?
A: First off don’t take it personally, journalists often get many submissions but can only use a few. Second, review what you are submitting. Ask yourself, is it authentic, non-AI generated, including stories or experiences, and original or unique? If not, you may not be chosen to be a quoted expert.

Of course, there were a few small rewrites that were needed, but that is to be expected. Anything written by AI needs to be thoroughly edited.
