Make yourself unforgettable

Public Speaking with a Purpose

So you want to become a public speaker, then how can you hone your craft, stand out, and bring value to your listeners?

Show them respect and don’t waste their time with useless material.

Be well prepared and you’ll make yourself unforgettable.

Know your topic and know your audience.

Connecting with your audience means you know who they are, what their interests are, what roles they have, their industries, concerns, level of knowledge, etc. Think about why your subject is important to your audience and what your objective is.

Common objectives:

  1. Inform

  2. Persuade

  3. Entertain

  4. Commemorate

Take your time finding a creative angle on your subject, doing so will make your speech more interesting.

Gather your material, thoughts, quotes, studies, etc. Organize it and keep only the best.

Identify the main points for your presentation.

Be straightforward and focused with your message. Don’t overwhelm the audience with too much information.

Now let’s prepare an outline!

Outline Basics:

  1. By using a short opening that triggers an emotional response, you will capture the attention of the audience and will contribute to achieving your objective.

  2. After your opening, bridge to a short introduction of the topic.

  3. Develop the meat of the material in small sections. Have your main points stand out.

  4. Have a conclusion that is memorable, related to the material, and motivational. The conclusion influences the effectiveness of the entire speech.

Listen attentively. Pay attention to your audience, and listen to both verbal and non-verbal feedback. Adjust your delivery appropriately. This is much easier if you’ve prepared well and know your topic.

Use stories, anecdotes, examples, and illustrations to connect with your audience. If you have connected with your audience on an emotional level, they may not remember everything you said, but they WILL remember how they felt. To do this you have to be authentic.

“Talk to someone about themselves, and they will listen for hours.”

Dale Carnegie

Do this now: Find a speaker that you like (may I recommend a TedTalk). Listen to their talk, then answer the following.

  1. What did you like about their opening?
    _____________

  2. How did they bridge to the topic?
    _____________

  3. Do you remember their main points?
    _____________

  4. Did the conclusion move you?
    ______________

Next time: Now that you’ve made your speech and you know what you’re going to say, next week lets talk about deliveryhow you’re going to say it.

Term to Learn

Manuscript speaking is the word-for-word iteration of a written message.

In contrast, an outline has the main thoughts and bulleted points, to help you recall what you wanted to say next. The use of outline is easier than using a manuscript. Outlines make your speech more interesting and motivating to your audience. It’s like a road map for your mind.

FAQ

Q: How many main points should I have in my speech?

A: How many can you remember from the last speech or talk you listened to? One, hopefully? People aren’t going to remember many points, no matter how great of a speaker you are, so 3-5 points should do.

Elephant Movers to the Rescue 🐘

Charley the elephant needed to make a big move for his retirement, and well being. Enter the elephant movers. This monumental task was left in the experienced hand of Amir Khalil and his team from Four Paws International.

Yes, even very niche, specialized businesses can get in the news.

Four Paws International has their own press page so media members can have easy access to press releases, photos, and other vital information.

Charlie the elephant’s move press release can be found under their press page.

Now I’m not sure if the AP News writer picked it up from the press release distribution or if he was pitched directly, either way I did notice that his beat is South Africa Sports. So I did more research and saw that he did some other stories about animals in Africa.

✍️ Key PR Takeaway: Do through research. Don’t rely on your first google search. Dig deep and find the right reporter. You never know what or who you’ll find.

Essential strategy:

  • Consider having a press page (or newsroom).

  • Pitch to the right reporter.

  • Provide good photos (in this article they were provided by the organization)

  • Tell a compelling story.

Trello

For individuals or teams looking to organize your PR efforts, of course an online spreadsheet will work for simple lists. But when you need a better way to organize all of your PR efforts, this is where Trello shines.

Trello app with cards and board for lists and to-do tasks

What I like is the kanban-style to-do list that looks like index cards on a board. The visuals combined with features like due dates, reminders, notes, attachments and team support make quick work of organizing PR tasks and getting them done on time.

Plus, the generous $0/mo. free-tier gives you unlimited cards on up to 10 boards (you only need one to manage your PR) with up to 10 collaborators.

Soon I’ll publish my Attention Seeker PR Trello template for you to get started quickly.
